Mud agitator is part of the drilling fluids solids control equipment, which is mainly used to agitate and mix the drilling mud to prevent solids particles from depositing in the circulating tank and to stabilize the performance of drilling fluids. The motor and speed reducer, speed reducer and impeller shaft are connected by steel coupling.

Working Principle of Using Mud Agitator

Mud agitator combined with motor and gear box. Mud agitators do agitation in drilling fluid make the solids suspend. Help drilling fluid property achieve better. Shaft will be connected with gear box coupled on motor. Under a certain ratio the shaft mounted with impeller rotate at uniform speed and lead an upward stream in drilling mud. This will benefit drilling mud mixture completely with sufficient viscosity, etc.

Key Components & Features

Motor: Typically explosion-proof for safety in hazardous oil and gas environments.

Reducer (Gearbox): Helical or worm-type gearboxes are used to transfer power, with helical types often preferred for higher efficiency (up to 95%).

Impeller: Usually four-blade designs (radial or axial flow) that produce vortex motion to suspend solids.

Shaft & Stabilizer: Vertical shaft length is customized to the tank depth, often with a bottom stabilizer to prevent vibration.

Main Applications in Drilling

Solids Suspension: Prevents solid particles from settling at the bottom of the mud tank, keeping them in suspension.

Chemical Mixing: Ensures uniform blending of drilling mud additives and weighting agents.

Fluid Performance: Maintains consistent mud density and viscosity, optimizing circulation and reducing equipment wear.

Surface System Efficiency: Used extensively in both onshore and offshore drilling rigs.

How proper operation a mud agitator

1. Before commissioning check if there is any release on the connection part and make them tight.
2. There should be no noise during operation or commissioning. If there is please stop running agitator and correct the problem.
3. Before running please check if the impeller rotation direction is the same as the marked direction.
4. Inspect oil height via observation window make sure the level always be at the center.
5. The gearbox should be lubricated by industrial gear oil if there is a special situation we can consider using grease oil with lower viscosity.

After 5 days operation please discharge all of the oil out of the gearbox and clean gearbox feed clean lubrication oil in it. Then do the same work every 6 months.
